Let's Celebrate Juneteenth Together

Royal Oak will celebrate Juneteenth with a family-friendly event at Centennial Commons on Sunday, June 19 from 4-8 pm.

Juneteenth -- or Freedom Day -- dates back to June 19, 1865. It is the date when enslaved African Americans in Texas first learned that they were free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on Jan. 1, 1863, it took more than two years for the news to spread to Texas.

Whether you've known the history your entire life or you're just learning about Juneteenth, freedom is always worth celebrating -- so let's do it together!

The Royal Oak Juneteenth event will be four hours of family-friendly activities, including music, games, performances, food trucks, vendors, giveaways and much more. If it rains, the plan is to move activities into the Royal Oak Farmers Market.

Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us as we highlight the history of Emancipation in the United States.

Book Giveaway to Attendees: Juneteenth for Mazie

Mazie learns to celebrate liberty. She learns to celebrate freedom. She is ready to celebrate a great day in American history. The day her ancestors were no longer slaves. Mazie remembers the struggles and the triumph, as she gets ready to celebrate Juneteenth and its importance through the story about her grandfather.

Mitcham Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church will bring to the event a music and dance showcase, courtesy of our Worship Arts Ministry.  It is our prayer that these expressions will provide a glimpse into what makes the black church unique, particularly with respect to the way we serve and praise God through movement and song.
