What Is Sustainability?
Sustainability focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
The concept of sustainability is composed of three pillars: economic, environmental, and social—also known informally as profits, planet, and people.
Many cities are engaging in sustainability through actions like protecting water and air quality, reducing energy waste, increasing clean energy installations, maintaining and increasing the tree canopy, increasing cultural cohesion, etc.
Sustainability encourages a community to make decisions based on economic, environmental, and social impacts for the long-term, rather than the short-term.
Cities are also committing to increasing equity considerations in decision making, implementing resilience measures, and community-wide reductions in carbon emissions.
