Vermont Avenue - Between 12 Mile and Parkdale, the contractor is prepping and grading for new sidewalk installation. Once complete concrete restoration will include driveway approaches, sidewalk and road patches. Residents will be notified in advance if they will lose access to their driveway. Between Parkdale and Girard, the contractor will be finishing transferring individual water services to the new main this week.

Parkdale Avenue - The contractor is continuing work on restoration this week, replacing concrete that was damaged due to water main work on the south side. The contractor will then backfill any holes in preparation for lawn restoration.

Houstonia Avenue - The contractor will backfill any holes in preparation for lawn restoration this week and has scheduled asphalt patching in early September.

Girard Avenue - The concrete restoration is on hold for this side street while the contractor works on the main residential streets.

Glendale Avenue - The contractor will continue connecting the new main to the existing system this week. This requires a water shut-off and any affected residents will be notified the day beforehand with the time and duration.

11 Mile Road/Stephenson - Water main installation is complete.

14 Mile Road - Traffic control equipment and materials have been delivered to site.  The contractor plans to begin new water main installation between Rochester and Campbell beginning the week of August 23rd.

Cloudy Water
Water can appear cloudy and/or rusty whenever there is a large draw of water from the water main, which is relatively common near water main projects. This can occur when water valves are opened and closed, when there are water main breaks, and when hydrants are flushed or used by the Fire Department.

Naturally occurring mineral deposits that accumulate within the water main get stirred up and become suspended particles, thus producing the discoloration in the water. Discolored water is temporary, and while unappealing, it is not harmful.

What to do?
Residents should run the cold water faucet closest to the meter (usually located in the basement or outside hose bib) for several minutes until the water runs clear. If the water does not clear after 20 minutes of flushing, contact the Engineering Division at 248.246.3260 or the Department of Public Service at 248.246.3300. Residents should avoid running hot water or washing clothes while water is discolored.
