Info: DOWNTOWN ROYAL OAK GETS A LITTLE GREENER ON APRIL 25, 2010!

Local organizations and community groups to help raise recycling awareness and host children’s activities. Free handheld electronic device recycling and secure document shredding!

Royal Oak, MI—Learn about living greener on Sunday, April 25, 2010 from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. on Third Street between Main and Williams in Downtown Royal Oak!

The family-friendly event offers something for everyone. For children, make and take activities will be available from Arts & Scraps, the Detroit Zoo and Douglas J Aveda Institute. Children will also have an opportunity to plant their own seeds, courtesy of English Gardens.

OUR Credit Union will be on-hand offering free document shredding to attendees during the event. Attendees can have up to two containers (boxes or bags) shredded and recycled for free. Additional boxes will be shredded for a $2 donation per box to the Children’s Miracle Network. OUR Credit Union will also offer information on shredding and recycling confidential documents, and an overview of their services.

To help reduce e-waste, Recycling for Charities will offer handheld personal electronic device recycling at the event. Look for their SMART car at the event to drop off your devices.

SOCRRA, The Sierra Club, The Environmental Advisory Board, the Royal Oak High School Students for Environmental Action, EcoSizeMe and Douglas J will be on hand with information and activities for adults.

The Environmental Advisory Board will offer recycling bins at a discounted price during the event. English Gardens will display products for greener gardening and composting. Douglas J Aveda Institute will offer chair and hand massages for adults, as well as product give-aways, and ideas for reusing containers. And, local resident expert Mr. Rain Barrel will provide demonstrations and information on storing and recycling rainwater.

Free, 15-minute yoga classes will be offered throughout the day courtesy of The Yoga Shelter; attendees desiring to participate are encouraged to dress appropriately.

Parking is always free throughout downtown on Sundays.

The event will also encourage the use of the recycling receptacles that were installed in an effort by the Environmental Advisory Board last year throughout Downtown.
